You may recall that back in November of last year Netflix announced a new gaming initiative that would see a number of both existing games and brand new titles become available to Netflix subscribers on mobile devices. Their initial offering included the two Stranger Things games, naturally, and the library has been growing steadily ever since and features some big names like Riot’s Hextech Mayhem and Rogue Snail’s Relic Hunters: Rebels. Since a lot of people already subscribe to Netflix for their great library of TV shows and movies, the addition of these games was like a really nice bonus for those subscribers and the Netflix Games library has been quietly filling out with a lot of good games in all types of genres, all without any ads or in-app purchases.
Well this week is Netflix’s Geeked Week virtual fan event, and they just dropped a lot of bombshells about new games that are set to come to their gaming library. Some of the biggest announcements include games that were hits on other platforms like Kentucky Route Zero and Spiritfarer, as well as brand new originals like Reigns: Three Kingdoms and the new Ustwo game Desta: The Memories Between, which we just posted about this morning. Here’s a super cut of all the upcoming Netflix mobile games.
Here is the full list of titles shown in the trailer: Reigns: Three Kingdoms, Wild Things, La casa de papel, Mahjong Solitaire, Raji, Spiritfarer, Shadow and Bone: Destinies, Poinpy, Immortality, Terra Nil, Before Your Eyes, The Queen’s Gambit Chess, Nailed It! Baking Bash, Hello Kitty Happiness Parade, Lucky Luna, Oxenfree, Desta: The Memories Between, Kentucky Route Zero, Too Hot to Handle. Netflix says that by the end of the year there will be more than 50 titles that are part of the Netflix library of games.
One title in particular that I’m excited to check out, and one that launched alongside this announcement and is available right now, is Poinpy from Ojiro Fumoto. If that developer name doesn’t immediately ring a bell, you may know him under his Twitter handle @moppppin and as the creator of the phenomenal Downwell. Being that Downwell is one of my all-time favorite games on any platform, and the fact that I had no idea what Ojiro Fumoto had even been working on for all this time, I’m incredibly excited to check out Poinpy. It’s like a really early Christmas gift or something. Here’s the full trailer for Poinpy so you can see it in action.
I have to say that I’ve been an advocate of Apple Arcade ever since its launch in 2019, and I still consider it a really good value for the amount of great games that it includes. However, after it’s blockbuster launch and then pivoting away from singular experiences and more towards games that foster “engagement" it’s been harder and harder to get too excited about each week’s new Apple Arcade offerings. Given this latest announcement from Netflix, and the game’s they’ve been adding to the service since last November, it’s hard not to feel like they’re blowing Apple Arcade out of the water. Granted the Netflix library is much younger than Apple Arcade and there’s a long way for them to go to match Apple Arcade in terms of quantity, but as a Netflix subscriber myself I’m extremely excited to see where things with Netflix Games are going.
