SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Citizen Sleeper’, ‘Rifftrax: The Game’, and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for May 5th, 2022. It’s Thursday, and in recent weeks that has meant an absolute avalanche of new releases. This week? I guess Golden Week here in Japan has had a serious effect, because we’ve only got a handful of new games to check out. A couple of them are pretty good. A couple of them are pretty bad. A couple of them are in between those two. Which are which? Read on to see. We also have the lists of new and outgoing sales for you to mull over. Let’s get going!

New Releases

Citizen Sleeper ($19.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Wow, this is a cool game. You play as a kind of synthetic human who has escaped a life of servitude to find their freedom, should they be able to hold on to it. Your body is degrading, and you have to constantly make sure you are meeting your needs as much as possible. Every day, you roll some dice and slot them into various events, with the number on the die determining how likely you are to get a good or bad outcome. The better your condition at the start of the day, the more dice you get to roll, and the more events you get to participate in. Stories and tales will unfold as you continue to take part in daily life in the abandoned station of Erlin’s Eye. If you like narrative games, give this one a shot.

Rifftrax: The Game ($9.99)

The creators of What the Dub?! and the folks at Rifftrax have gotten together to make an official Rifftrax game, and it sure seems to be a match made in heaven. You get more than two hundred and fifty movie clips with such infamous works as Rollergator and Plan 9 From Outer Space, and you have to riff on them. You can either make up your own riffs and have the text-to-speech read them, or you can choose from a huge list of prebuilt riffs from the Rifftrax people. You can play with up to six players via local or online multiplayer, battling to see who can come up with the silliest quips. Seems like both a good party game and a nice treat for fans of Rifftrax.

Best Month Ever! ($19.99)

Louise is taking her son Mitch on a road trip in this adventure set in 1960s America. Make choices that will shape Mitch’s life, and learn a little bit about how Louise came to be in the situation that she is in. You can check Mitch’s stats at any time to see how your decisions are affecting his character, leading up to one of nine different outcomes for him at the end of the game. Potentially intriguing stuff, but I haven’t had a chance to play this one myself yet so I can’t speak to the quality of the writing and such.

Space Lines: A Puzzle Arcade Game ($5.99)

This is QIX with fancier graphics. Okay, that’s not the whole story. There are a handful of extra elements here that separate this from its source of inspiration, such that I think any fans of QIX may want to look into picking this up. There are more than one hundred stages, over thirty ships to unlock and use, and even support for local multiplayer for up to four people.

War Mines Collection ($3.99)

This is Minesweeper with fancy backgrounds. It has a war theme, and there are little bits of story to go with each puzzle. Somehow this low-cost little puzzle game takes up nearly 3 GB. Personally, I’d rather play Minesweeper in a form closer to the original. Perhaps you feel differently.

Super Mike: Classic Adventure Game ($9.99)

My goodness, this has some serious “free mobile platformer found stuck to the bottom of your shoe after a run near the garbage dump" energy. I can’t remember if T-Bull dabbles in template flips or not, but if I can’t tell a game apart from a template flip it’s probably not something you’ll want to spend a tenner on.

Casino Heaven: Slots & Bonus Games ($9.99)

Another incredibly generic slots game. As it advertises, it has a bonus game or two to mix things up. I can’t imagine paying ten bucks for this either. T-Bull really isn’t bringing its A-game today. Or its B-game. Or its C-game. Not even its D-game, really.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Following the pattern of the new releases, there isn’t a whole lot in the inbox today. I imagine we’ll see quite a few more discounts tomorrow, but for now there isn’t much to grab outside of the Dungeons & Dragons RPGs if you haven’t picked them up before. The outbox has more going on, with the Star Wars May the Fourth deals wrapping up along with the recent SEGA/Atlus sale. Have a look through and see if there’s anything you want.

That’s all for today, friends. I wish I could tell you that tomorrow will be a busy day of new releases, but it’s looking fairly light at the moment. I won’t rule out a bunch of surprise drops, but at least at the moment things look quiet. There should at least be a bunch of new sales to look at, and there may even be some news. That sometimes happens on these not-so-busy days. I hope you all have a thrilling Thursday, and as always, thanks for reading!
