SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Arcade Archives Fighting Hawk’, ‘Chefy-Chef’, and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for May 6th, 2022. Today is technically not a holiday in Japan, but the country is still somewhat in Golden Week mode. That’s my theory for why the eShop has been rather quiet this week, anyway. Today is no exception. We’ve only got five games to check out, and I’d say more than half of them are of dubious merit. At least we have a big list of sales to check out, along with the discounts scheduled to expire over the weekend. Let’s get to it!

New Releases

Arcade Archives Fighting Hawk ($7.99)

Taito was involved in publishing and distributing a number of Toaplan games, but in 1988 the famed company took a swing at making its own Toaplan-like shoot-em-up. Fighting Hawk isn’t quite on the same level as the likes of Flying Shark or Tiger Heli, but it’s a fun, cool shooter that is worth playing for fans of the genre. Hamster has done its usual high-quality job with this, adding a number of options and ensuring the emulation is sound.

Chefy-Chef ($4.99)

Ah, there’s that five-dollar Switch platformer energy we all know and love. Play as a chef and make your way through sixty levels spread across three different worlds. Pick up different cooking implements to get access to new abilities. Search the stages for secret burgers to unlock new duds for your little chef. Seems amusing enough.

Mahjong: Magic Casual Puzzle ($9.99)

It’s a Mahjong Solitaire game with two hundred levels to play. As you go through the stages, you’ll unlock new tiles and backgrounds that you can use as you like in the free play mode. The presentation isn’t too shabby. I don’t have too much more to say about this one. If you can’t get enough Mahjong Solitaire, here is another helping.

Nirvana ($6.99)

As near as I can tell, this is just racer/visual novel hybrid Nirvana Pilot Yume getting a new release under a slightly different name with a marginally higher price. It’s also rated Teen instead of Mature, with the “nudity" descriptor being removed from the extended ratings information. Most likely some of the spicier scenes from the original game have been removed from this version. Does it add anything? Well, the file size is bigger, so probably? A very mysterious release.

Flatout Pixel Racing ($4.99)

Another shabby effort from Benjamin Kistler. More likely than not to be a template flip. It’s a top-down racer with twelve tracks and some unlockable skins. I guess we should at least be thankful it isn’t locked to handheld mode.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Some good games in the list along with a lot of usual suspects. Horizon Chase Turbo is great and its DLC is worth grabbing. The Kids We Were and Paradise Killer are both really strong narrative experiences. Wingspan is on sale to celebrate the launch of its latest DLC. Bandai Namco is also having a big sale, same as they do every few weeks. As for the outbox, there isn’t too much to get fussy about. Star Wars Pinball and DEEMO are worth considering, I suppose. MO:Astray is also great fun. Well, check those lists.
