SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Xenoblade Chronicles 3’ Release Date, ‘Star Wars: The Force Unleashed’ Out Now, and More

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for April 20th, 2022. In today’s article, we’ve got some news about the release date of Xenoblade Chronicles 3, summaries of a few interesting new releases, and the usual lists of new and outgoing sales. Between de-canonized untold stories, honorable cat warriors, and hunting down the lowest of the low, this is a more noteworthy Wednesday of releases than the average Wednesday. Let’s get to it!

News

‘Xenoblade Chronicles 3’ Arrives in July Instead of September

That’s not something you see every day. Games get delayed all the time. Games release a few days early now and then. But it’s pretty rare to see a game move its release date up by almost two months. That’s just what appears to have happened with Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Originally scheduled for release in September, Nintendo surprised everyone yesterday by announcing that the game will instead launch on July 29th with a Special Edition including an artbook and SteelBook. More RPGs to play this summer? I’m really feeling it.

New Releases

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed ($19.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

The well-liked Wii version of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed makes a return in Aspyr’s latest release. Yes, that means you can use the motion controls if that is your thing. Perhaps importantly, if that is not your thing, you do not have to use motion controls. Follow the now non-canonical adventures of Darth Vader’s secret apprentice Starkiller in a story set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. You’ve got a lightsaber and Force powers and that really puts you well on the way to a good game all on its own. Travel the galaxy, do some evil, travel some more, maybe have a crisis of conscience, I don’t know. Star Wars things. There’s also a local multiplayer duel mode with twenty-seven characters, though you never really hear people talk about that part of this game much. I’ll have a review of this one soon.

Catana ($6.99)

In Catana you control a cat who wields a katana. So that’s the name sorted out. Now, as to the game itself, it’s a matching puzzle sort of game. Catana has his pride and will not attack a single enemy, so you’ve got to hit groups of two or more to remove them. Each of the more than one hundred levels will give you some goal to accomplish, like defeating a certain amount of a particular enemy in X number of moves. The visuals have a lot of charm to them, and the gameplay is quite enjoyable. Not a bad pick-up if you’re looking for a matching puzzler that is different from the norm without losing the basic joys of the genre.

Ashland Dossier ($10.99)

This is an unusual adventure game set in the 1950s in which you take control of a force dedicated to hunting down runaway Nazis so that they can face the music for their monstrous actions. You’re not unopposed, however. A secret group called Ashland is out there trying to help those Nazis evade justice. The basic flow sees you pinpointing the location of a suspect, following them, and extracting them. You’ll have to examine all the clues and witness testimony, and depending on how you do you’ll arrive at one of the game’s multiple endings. This seems like it could be interesting, but I haven’t had a chance to play it yet.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

A tiny list of new sales, with little of serious note included. I guess you could grab some of those 2K games that are on sale every other week, I don’t know. The outbox is a bit more interesting, with sales from Bandai Namco, Game Mill, and a few others finishing up. I’ll call special attention to FEZ, which was discounted to celebrate the game’s tenth anniversary. It’s not on sale all that often, and it really is wonderful. Well, you know what to do.
