SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Chicory’, ‘Dungeon Munchies’, ‘Let’s Play! Oink Games’, and Today’s Other Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 16th, 2021. In today’s article, we’ve got a whole lot of new releases to look at. More than expected thanks to the Indie World Showcase yesterday. We’ve got summaries of all of the new games, including such fantastic titles as Chicory: A Colorful Tale and Dungeon Munchies. We’ve also got a rather hefty list of new sales, plus the latest list of expiring ones. Let’s get to work!

New Releases

Chicory: A Colorful Tale ($19.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

This is a cute top-down adventure game set in a coloring book world. You can paint on everything. Cool. It even has support for touch controls. The story goes that superstar artist Chicory has gone missing and took all of the world’s color with her. You’re her number one fan, and you take it upon yourself to fill in for her. Use your painting abilities to solve puzzles, pick up new abilities to open new paths, and customize your character’s appearance as you see fit. You can play on your own or pull in a friend for some local co-op. This is a very good game. Pick it up if you like very good games.

Let’s Play! Oink Games ($21.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

You may or may not be familiar with Oink Games, but they’re a Japanese board game company founded by former members of Skip. This Switch collection includes adaptations of four of those games, playable online or offline with up to eight players. Deep Sea Adventure, Startups, Moon Adventure, and my personal favorite A Fake Artist Goes to NY. Apparently more games will be added in the future, likely as paid DLC. You really need other players to enjoy this one, but if you like party games you’ll probably find something to enjoy here.

Dungeon Munchies ($16.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Lots of good games today, but don’t let this one slip past you in all of the bustle. This is a side-scrolling action-RPG where you are what you eat, and what you eat is your enemies. Hunt down creatures, cook up a nice balanced meal, and see what abilities you’ll gain. If there are any bits leftover that you can’t eat, you can use them to craft weapons and other tools. As you delve deeper into the dungeon, more of the story will be revealed. I think it’s quite spiffy, but you don’t have to take my word for it. The game has gotten heaps of praise on other platforms.

Arcade Archives Mirai Ninja ($7.99)

Yeah, this is the kind of thing I was hoping to see when Hamster signed Namco up for Arcade Archives. It’s not that 1988’s Mirai Ninja is a particularly good game. It’s not. It’s barely decent. But never in a million years would Namco bring this game back out on its own. Hamster digs deep, and even if the games aren’t great, it’s awesome to see them made more accessible to a wider audience. In the case of this game, it’s one of the first to have a live-action movie based on it. Historically notable! It’s also very unlikely you’ve played it before! If either of those things are what pulls you to the Arcade Archives line, Mirai Ninja may be for you.

Trash Quest ($9.99)

This is apparently a Metroidvania where you play as a space raccoon with a gun. No, not that one. That would be infringement. This one doesn’t wear clothes. Anyway, it follows the usual formula where you get new abilities that allow you to reach new places. There’s only a single spawn point that you go back to every time you die, so I’d imagine it’s not a terribly big game. Still, there’s a certain appeal to the way its pixels are laid out.

Murder Diaries 3 – Santa’s Trail of Blood ($9.99)

Well, isn’t that special? This is similar to the other Murder Diaries games. You play as a floating soul and you need to search the environments for memories that will tell the story piece by piece. This one has a Christmas theme, but it’s one of those Christmas stories about serial killers and horror. Not really my kind of thing, but maybe it’s yours?

Sakura Santa ($9.99)

Hey, it’s another Sakura visual novel. You know what to expect by now, surely. Koji is feeling lonely because it’s his first Christmas away from home. He goes to the local shrine and prays to have someone to spend the holiday with. Soon after, he meets three young women, all of whom think he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. In fact, they all want to spend time with him leading up to Christmas Day. Make your choices and see who Koji will end up with.

Dinosaur Jigsaw Puzzles – Dino Puzzle Game For Kids & Toddlers ($14.99)

That’s one of those titles that tells you almost everything you need to know. It requires the touchscreen so it’s meant for undocked play only. And that’s all I’ve got to say about this.

The Enigma Machine ($7.99)

Yes, that’s the real screenshot. Don’t reload your browser, it’s supposed to look like that. It’s a combination of first-person exploration and point-and-click adventure mechanics, and it’s pretty good. You jump into the mind of an AI and explore it via the Dreamscape interface. As you can tell, it has a unique presentation that catches the eye almost immediately. If you’re looking for an adventure game that’s a bit on the quirky side, this could be your ticket.

OMNO ($15.99)

This is a brief, relaxing, atmospheric puzzle adventure. It’s definitely an impressive effort from what amounts to a one-man team, with plenty of interesting sights to see. Unfortunately there isn’t a whole lot I can say about it as I haven’t had a chance to play it yet, but reviews were fairly positive for the game on other platforms. I’d say if you’re into these kinds of short narrative experiences, you’ll want to consider picking up OMNO.

Love Pop! ($8.99)

This is a game about old-fashioned courtship. Maybe. You’re blowing kisses to your neighbor in the next building, but you’ll have to draw lines to make sure they get where they need to go. There are more than one hundred levels to clear, each with different obstacles and problems to guide the hearts around. It feels like a lost game from the early Nintendo DS era, though you’ll be drawing those lines with the controller instead of a stylus. Not really the same, but hey, neither is the price.

Timelie ($19.99)

Hey, it’s an adventure/puzzle game where you manipulate time to solve puzzles. Strangely, it’s not the only one of these in today’s bunch. This one leans more into a stealth style of gameplay, where you have to use your abilities to sneak around deadly robots. You control two characters, a girl and her cat, and you’ll need to use them to make your way through each tricky situation. Reviews of the PC version were favorable if not overwhelmingly so. If the concept interests you, give it a closer look.

FILMECHANISM ($19.99)

And here’s our other time manipulation game for today. Kind of, anyway. You have the abilities to record and restore and have to use them to solve the puzzles in each stage. Basically, you take a snapshot of something, and then move it or manipulate it, and then restore back to the original state. The simple example is recording a block, then pushing it so you can get past, then restoring it so that it won’t be in your way anymore. You get more than 200 puzzles here, so it’s definitely a big-pants puzzler. Once again I’ll say that if you like the premise you’ll probably like the game.

Hashihime of the Old Book Town Append ($61.64)

We’ve had plenty of yuri-themed visual novels on the Switch, but BL (boy’s love) titles are significantly rarer. Well, here’s one set in the Taisho era about a young man named Tamamori who ends up working in a used book store after failing to pass his university entrance exams. Soon his friends start dying one by one under mysterious circumstances. Even stranger, Tamamori realizes he is stuck in a three-day time loop. Can he save his friends? And what is really going on? It’s a wild ride, albeit a very linear one. There are five different men to romance, up to and including the masked man that is stalking in the shadows. You sure can’t say this game fails to pack its fair share of twists.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Lots in today’s list of new sales. There are some Bandai Namco games, some Electronic Arts games, some Onion Games, and a whole bunch more. Take your time going through the list, as there is some neat stuff there. I’m expecting a lot more tomorrow, too. The outbox has some good games in it as well, so you might as well check that list too. I’m late for dinner, so I’ll cut it short there!
