SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Epistory’, ‘Revolver and Co’, ‘Pictooi’, and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for July 2nd, 2021. In today’s article, we go through the rest of the releases for the week. Quite a few today, though nothing is really shining brightly to my eye. We’ve got summaries of all of them so that you can make the decision on your own, though. In addition, we’ve got a very large list of new sales to check out, and a very small list of expiring sales to consider one last time. Let’s check it all out!

New Releases

Epistory – Typing Chronicles ($14.99)

Pull out those USB keyboards, friends. This is a typing adventure! Perhaps you can play it without a keyboard, but why? You play a girl riding a giant fox who is exploring a storybook world. You can control every element in the game by typing on a keyboard, but you’ll also need to solve puzzles and battle enemies. The aim is for your character, the Muse, to help the Writer get past their writer’s block by collecting fragments and inspirations in the world. The difficulty is dynamic and will adjust itself based on your typing speed. I think this one comes down to whether or not you’re willing to play it with a keyboard. If you’re cool with that, then this has a unique charm to it. If not, I’m more hesitant to recommend it.

Mythic Ocean ($14.99)

It’s time for a god to remake the world! But which god? That one is up to you when you play Mythic Ocean. Wander around the sea and interact with a mini-pantheon of gods, engaging in conversations with them that will ultimately lead you to one ending or another. Whose favor will you try to earn? Who will you befriend? Who shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near the new world? It feels a lot like a visual novel at times, but the exploration component gives it a different flavor even if there isn’t any actual purpose to it.

Colossus Mission ($4.99)

You control a ship and need to clear over seventy levels filled with an array of traps and hazards. It’s one of those games where you’re thrusting your ship about in an Asteroids-like manner. Part of the challenge comes from the dangers of the environments you’re moving through, but you’ll also need to master the controls to avoid careening off into a wall or laser or something. The presentation is a bit patchwork but if you don’t care about that, this is fine enough for a fiver. Make sure you’re down with that thrust-style gameplay though.

Revolver and Co ($7.99)

I don’t know what I expected when I first glanced at this game’s title, but it sure wasn’t a trivia game. That’s what this is, though. You wield a gun that shoots trivia questions, and the more incorrect you are the more ammo it consumes. There are over 2,000 trivia questions to answer across multiple categories, so you shouldn’t see repeats for a while. Oddly enough, this is a single-player only game. You play through 105 story levels set across seven different worlds in the story mode, or you can dive into an endless mode that fires questions at you until you run out of ammo. If you enjoy trivia, this feels like a no-brainer pick-up for eight bucks.

Foodtruck Arena ($15.99)

Another local multiplayer arena battler for up to four players, Foodtruck Arena differentiates itself by being about food trucks. Which is admittedly a pretty weird topic for an arena battler. There’s a single-player mode here in case you don’t have anyone to play with, but I’d imagine you’re not getting the full-flavor experience unless you’re doing the multiplayer. There are different arenas, different trucks, and lots of food-related weapons to use against your opponents. I’m not really into it, but maybe you will be?

Best Day Ever ($14.99)

This is a narrative game where you need to manage the lives of four different people to try to help them with their problems. There’s only so much each of them can do in a day, and you have to decide how they’ll spend their time in order to give them the best day ever. That’s where the title comes from, you see. There are multiple endings for each of the characters, so there’s a bit of replay value in here for those seeking it. The gameplay feels like one of those worker management games, but the stories are engaging enough.

Pictooi ($9.99)

From the makers of Mutant Mudds and Xeodrifter comes… a Picross-style game? Well hey, I guess you can never have enough of those. Admittedly, the Switch is probably going to put that statement to the test like no other system. Anyway, Pictooi. You get 300 puzzles to solve, running the gamut from tiny 5 x 5 puzzles to decent-sized 20 x 20 ones. Some of them are standard picture puzzles, others will have you solving puzzles to fill in pieces of a larger diorama. What really helps Pictooi stand out is its presentation. I can tell a lot of thought went into its interface and all the little details that add personality to a game like this. If you need another scoop of logic puzzle fun, this is one of your options today.

Super Destronaut DX-2 ($4.99)

Yeah, this seems fine. A follow-up to the original Super Destronaut, this Space Invaders-inspired shoot-em-up leans more into the Extreme end of that pool to good results. There are thirty different challenges to complete, five different arcade modes to play, and some stats to look at in order to admire your towering achievements. You can play in a timed mode, a standard three-life mode, and even a mode where you have a limited number of shots. The enemy patterns are more complicated than in the previous game, adding to the challenge. I’m not sure you need another single-screen shooter, but this one isn’t bad for the price.

New York Mysteries: Secrets of the Mafia ($6.99)

In this hidden object adventure game, you step into the role of a reporter named Laura James as she investigates the disappearance of several mafia bosses. It’s set in 1950s New York, so that’s interesting. Anyway, there are more than fifty different locations to explore, more than forty mini-games to play, and lots of puzzles to solve. It seems like an unusual setting for the genre, which may or may not appeal to fans of this kind of adventure game. I don’t know enough about these sorts of games to say much more than that, however.

Spider Solitaire Collection ($5.79)

Following in the footsteps of other recent solitaire collections, this one has ten different variations of the popular card game Spider Solitaire. Apart from the different rules, you can take advantage of unlimited undos and auto complete features. There are also stats, and rules that you can read for each type. The presentation isn’t very fancy, particularly compared to some other Spider Solitaire games on the eShop. It’s up to you whether you prefer a more stylish presentation or the variety of having different games.

Kids: Farm Puzzle ($4.99)

Pretty much what it claims to be. This is a jigsaw puzzle game aimed at young kids where all of the pictures are farm animals. There are three difficulty levels, and when you complete the puzzle you get a little animation as a reward. I’m not going to pretend this is aimed at me or indeed most of you readers, but anyone who has younger kids and wants to give them something colorful and simple to mess around with might find this worth looking at.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Lots of new sales today, but it’s an odd bunch. There are games in here that are almost never on sale, but I wouldn’t say they’re must-haves by any means. The good games in the list are, by and large, the ones we see get discounted quite often. I don’t have anything particular to highlight this time, so I’ll leave that list to you. The weekend outbox isn’t very big or interesting, but you might as well have a look at it while you’re going through the rest.
